One of the things I love most about being a blogger in Chicago is being invited to opening performances of the Chicago Children’s Theatre. They graciously allow me to bring one of my children and the entire evening turns into a magical date night with one of my sons. Attending the opening performance of Harold and the Purple Crayon with my 6th year old last week was magical, mesmerizing, and to quote my son “definitely worth the drive into the city”.
Harold and the Purple Crayon teaches young audiences that anything is possible with a crayon and a big imagination. Meet Harold, a curious four year old boy who, armed with his trusty purple crayon, has the power to create a world of his own simply by drawing it. This imaginative musical uses breathtaking animation, inventive puppetry, and original music to bring Harold’s purple-hued world to life; it is perfect for introducing young children to theatre while simultaneously captivating their older companions.
My son and I both loved the colorful animation and special effects. Harold brought trees, dragons, the sea, picnics, space, and even crayon eaters to life with his entertaining drawings and wild imagination.
