A Night at the Chicago Children’s Theatre
I’ve been trying to find the perfect words to describe how I’m feeling right now. When I close my eyes and ask my inner wisdom for the words I’m looking for, the word that comes to me is….JOY!
Joy of being a mom.
Joy of living in Chicago.
Joy for the Chicago Children’s Theatre.
Joy of going into the city with my 6 year old last night and seeing The Elephant and The Whale.
Going into the city for one-on-one Mother/Son Date Nights is simply priceless.
Going to the Theater…
On Saturday, our adventure started with a train ride into the city, followed by a taxi ride to the theater. For my six year old, that alone is exciting. Then we watched a precious performance of The Elephant and The Whale. We watched. We laughed. We listened. And thanks to the whale, we even got a little wet.
The Elephant and The Whale, presented by Chicago Children’s Theatre in association with Redmoon, is a new family fable featuring sea voyages, wild mechanical objects, circus songs, panoramic paintings, exquisite shadow puppets and an innovative sound design. If you are considering having a Mother/Son (or daughter) Date Night, I highly recommend taking your child to see a live performance. There is something timeless about going to the theater with your children.

After the Show…
After the show we went on an adventure to find dinner. We walked in and out of restaurants until we find the perfect spot – Five Faces Ice Cream Shop. We grabbed some grub, eat too many cheesy fries, and laughed until we were full.
After a long day, we jumped back into a taxi, then onto a train, then into my car and headed home.
When I was putting my son to bed last night, we looked deep into my eyes, gave me a huge hug, and said “Thank you Mommy for one of the best days of my life”.
Do you see why the only word I can use to describe this experience is…JOY!
As I went to bed, I was thinking how cool it would be if in 30+ years from now my children told their children about the times I took them into the city…about our big city adventures. I hope they’ll cherish these experiences as much as I do.
